Worth the drive.

Starlight Mesa sits on a high-desert ridge outside Ocotillo Flats, in the Big Bend region of far West Texas. The nearest towns for fuel and groceries are Alpine and Marathon. Come with a full tank and a loose schedule.

Good to Know

Before you come.

When is dark-sky season, and when is the sky darkest?+

We're open September through May, when the desert nights are longest and clearest. The sky is at its very darkest in the week around each new moon — those dates book first, so plan ahead if a moonless sky is the goal.

Is there cell service or Wi-Fi?+

Cell service is spotty by nature of where we are, and that's rather the point. There's Wi-Fi in the main lodge for anything urgent, but the domes and tents are intentionally offline — bring a book, not a laptop.

Are the domes heated and cooled?+

Yes. Every dome is fully climate-controlled for warm days and cold desert nights. The safari tents are heated and come with wool blankets, but are best enjoyed in the milder shoulder months.

What's the nearest airport?+

Midland International (MAF) is about 2.5 hours away; El Paso (ELP) is about 3 hours. Both are straightforward drives, and the last stretch through the desert is part of the experience. You'll want a car out here.

Can we bring children or pets?+

Starlight Mesa is designed as a quiet, adults-focused escape, so we welcome guests 16 and up. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the safari tents by prior arrangement — just let us know when you book.

Is there food on-site?+

We offer a chef's fire dinner most evenings (reserve ahead) and an in-dome breakfast basket. For everything else, Alpine and Marathon have groceries and restaurants about 45–50 minutes out, so many guests arrive stocked for the stay.

What should I pack?+

Layers — desert nights get cold even in warm months. A red-light flashlight (we provide one) preserves everyone's night vision. And bring a good jacket for late nights on the deck; the best part of the night is usually the coldest.

What if it's cloudy?+

West Texas gives us some of the clearest skies in the country, but weather is weather and we can't refund for clouds. The good news: even a partly cloudy night out here is darker than most people have ever seen, and the domes are lovely in any weather.

A few things that keep the ridge quiet, the sky dark, and every guest's night as good as yours.

Check-in & Check-out

Check-in is 3:00–7:00pm; we close arrivals at dusk so no headlights sweep the ridge after dark. Check-out is 11:00am, or 2:00pm with the late-checkout add-on.

Arriving after 7pm? Let us know in advance and we'll arrange a dark-friendly late arrival.

Minimum Stay

Two nights minimum on weekends and all new-moon dates. Single weeknights are available outside peak dates, subject to availability.

Deposits & Payment

A one-night deposit holds your reservation; the balance is charged seven days before arrival. We accept all major cards. Add-ons like the chef's dinner can be arranged before or during your stay.

Cancellation

Cancel 14 days or more before arrival for a full refund of your deposit. Inside 14 days, the deposit is non-refundable but transferable to a future date within the same season, once. We don't refund for weather.

Dark-Sky Etiquette

This is the heart of it. After dark, we ask that all white light stays off outdoors — no phone flashlights, no headlamps, no bright screens on the decks. Every stay comes with a red-light lantern that protects your night vision and your neighbors'.

Quiet hours run 10pm to 7am. Sound carries a long way across an empty desert.

Fires & Smoking

Fire rings are for the tents and designated areas only, and are subject to county burn bans — we'll tell you the day's status at check-in. Starlight Mesa is entirely smoke- and vape-free indoors and on all decks.

Guests, Children & Pets

Rates are for two guests; the domes and tents sleep two. We welcome guests 16 and older. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the safari tents by prior arrangement, with a small pet fee.

We sit on natural desert ground with gravel paths and some grade. Two domes are configured for step-free access — tell us your needs when booking and we'll match you to the right stay.
